SAN ANTONIO — Without Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle due to injury, the San Antonio Spurs saw their three-game winning streak stopped against the Phoenix Suns, 111-102. De’Aaron Fox led the team with 26 points and three assists.
Kelly Olynyk had four, and Keldon Johnson finished with 14. Devin Vassell scored 17, and Julian Champagnie had 10. Harrison Barnes recorded 11 points, and Jeremy Sochan added seven.
The Suns connected on 10-21 three-point shots in the second half while the Spurs committed 19 turnovers.
The Spurs are 11-5 and will next visit the Blazers on Wednesday night.
Here’s a sample of what the Spurs and Hawks said after the game.
Mitch Johnson:
“We didn’t come out with the right approach at this time. They (Suns) got a few shots that were probably too comfortable. They made the plays obviously, so credit to them, but I thought we could have shown a lot more resistance and discipline at times with the game execution, especially in the third quarter.”
“Credit to them, they did a good job of making the ball stick and minimizing our ball movement.”
“We have to be mindful with our passes, setting up how we get to our spots, our execution on the half court. I think just overall, I think it’s at this early point in the season we are putting our brain at the basketball.”
“I think we allowed their physicality to dictate the game. I think that is where a lot of our turnovers came from. I think we only turned them over two times at halftime. I am not sure what we ended the game with, but we can not allow that physicality to just dictate the game like that, we have to be able to hit them first. Even when we were up double digits, we were losing the rebound battle.”
