The Spurs saw their five-game winning streak end in Phoenix.

SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Spurs lost to the Phoenix Suns 130-118, snapping their five-game winning streak. Stephon Castle led the Spurs with 26 points and five assists.

Victor Wembanyama finished with nine points, four blocks and 4-14 shooting. He was held to just two points in the opening half, marking the fewest points he’s scored in a half this season.

Rookie Carter Bryant had 10 points. Devin Vassell added four, Keldon Johnson finished with 19 and rookie Dylan Harper (12 points) exited the game in the first half due to a calf injury. He did not return to the game. Harrison Barnes added 13.

The Spurs are 5-1 and will next visit the Lakers on Wednesday night.

Here’s a sample of what the Spurs said after the game.

Mitch Johnson:

“The season’s long. And so again, there are teaching moments in every game. I think we did not start with the proper approach, and it is hard to fight an uphill battle or to chase in his league. When you don’t start with the right approach and someone does to the level that Phoenix did, you can be in for a really long night.”

“I feel like we kind of needed this. I feel like we were starting to get a little comfortable, so this is kind of a wake-up call for us. So I mean, I’m happy to see how we’re going to respond on Wednesday (versus Lakers).

“In these types of games, we see it all the time. Teams come back. So I mean, we knew we weren’t going to give up, so I mean, he’s (Mitch Johnson) just trying to put that energy and confidence into us. I mean, that’s just what he does as a coach.”

Wembanyama:

“I think they did a great job scheming defensively. They were expecting everything that they did, which makes everything hard for us. I think we need to be more in tune in the future.”
