‘Super-vibey’ Holey Moley mini golf complex replaces Austin’s Native

Late last week, Native, formerly Native Hostel, suddenly closed. Austin’s East Side bar and location for multiple restaurants didn’t give much notice before closing its doors for good.

This weekend, it was unveiled that in its place will be Holey Moley, a Topgolf-esque mini-golf complex with a large outdoor space at 807 E. 4th St., Austin, TX 78702. Holey Moley Austin is slated to open in November.

According to a news release, Holey Moley will have 27 holes of putt-putt, plus food and drinks. The location will bring “friends and families together for par-ticularly good mini golf,” and, because this is 2023 Austin, will also have “Instagrammable cocktails,” plus “super-vibey, multi-sensory experiences and new, iconic pop-culture themes woven into the golf holes.”

It’s the third U.S. location for Australia’s Funlab concepts, and the first in the U.S. to be designed from scratch by Holey Moley. The upcoming Holey Moley locations in San Francisco and Denver will be remodels of existing Urban Putt locations.

The renovation will cost an estimated $900,000, according to a filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation from June 7. Construction is set to be completed on December 4.

Native opened in 2017 as a hostel and bar with a restaurant. More recently, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the business model shifted, becoming its own sort of concept complex for different businesses.

Tiny Diner closed in June, and chef and owner Domonic Candy was not particularly pleased with the short notice he received or the concept replacing Native, telling Eater Austin, “This was very much a surprise for me and to have to close less than a month with no notice has really put us in a bind. It was just a waste of opportunity. The building had such a historic tie to Austin but now will be owned by an out-of-country company.”

La Santa Barbacha has moved to Manor Road and Mama A’s is looking for a new space, per Eater Austin. Sushi speakeasy Toshokan and Eastend Tattoos were apparently given the opportunity to stay at the location, Eater Austin says.
