Suspect arrested after assaulting off duty officer on Nacogdoches Road

Police say the officer was injured while confronting a theft suspect who later tried to flee.

SAN ANTONIO — A suspect is in custody after police say he assaulted an off-duty officer during a confrontation on the northeast side of San Antonio.

According to the San Antonio Police Department, officers were called around 10:42 p.m. Saturday to the 16000 block of Nacogdoches Road, not far from Loop 1604, for reports of an assault on a peace officer.

Investigators say the off-duty officer was attempting to confront a man suspected in a theft when the situation turned violent.

Police say the suspect fought the officer, causing injuries, before running from the scene.

Responding officers searched the area and located the suspect nearby.

He was taken into custody without further incident.

Authorities say the 31-year-old man now faces a charge of assault on a peace officer.

The officer’s condition has not been released.

SAPD says the investigation remains ongoing.
