Suspect arrested after off-duty Caldwell County deputy killed in North Austin shooting

The shooting happened at Club Rodeo on North Lamar Boulevard just after 2 a.m. Sunday.

AUSTIN, Texas — Police have arrested a suspect after an off-duty deputy with the Caldwell County Precinct 3 Constable’s Office was shot and killed in North Austin on Sunday morning.

The incident happened at Club Rodeo at 9515 N. Lamar Blvd., near West Rundberg Lane, just after 2 a.m. The Caldwell County Constable’s Office said the deputy, later identified as Aaron Armstrong, was working a security position at the establishment. Armstrong had been with the constable’s office since October 2024.

According to the Austin Police Department, when officers arrived on the scene, they found Armstrong injured in the parking lot. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

According to the Caldwell County Constable’s Office, Armstrong had been commissioned with the agency since October 2024. Prior to that, he served with the Smithville Police Department from 2011 until 2015.

Austin City Council Member José “Chito” Vela (District 4) commented on the incident on the X platform, saying it was a sad loss.

“I’m heartbroken by the death of Aaron Armstrong, an off duty Caldwell County constable, who was shot last night working security at a nightclub in District 4,” Vela wrote. “My deepest condolences to his family, loved ones, and fellow officers as they grieve his loss.”

The suspect was arrested at around 3:45 p.m. Sunday by the U.S. Marshals Lone Star Fugitive Task Force, with assistance from APD Air Support, the K9 unit and the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS). Police did not immediately reveal the identity of the suspect.
