Suspect arrested in connection to Live Oak murder; investigators still searching for suspected shooters

Darius Gladney is accused of helping the suspected shooters flee the scene of the deadly shooting and abandon the suspect vehicle.

LIVE OAK, Texas — A suspect is now in custody in connection with a deadly shooting that rocked a quiet neighborhood in Live Oak earlier this week.

32-year-old Darius Gladney was arrested Friday night and charged with engaging in organized criminal activity-murder, according to an arrest warrant. His bond is set at $300,000.

According to an arrest warrant, Live Oak police received multiple 911 calls early Wednesday morning after witnesses reported four suspects—dressed in all black, wearing gloves and masks—opened fire on 29-year-old Albert Roy outside his home in the Auburn Hills subdivision off O’Connor Road.

Investigators with the Texas Rangers report in the warrant that Roy had just stepped outside his house around 7:20 a.m. when the gunmen started shooting. As Roy tried to escape the gunfire, he was struck and ran toward a neighbor’s home, where he collapsed and died, according to authorities.

Officers recovered a large number of shell casings—from at least three different firearms—scattered in the front yard of the home where Roy was found, according to an arrest warrant.

Detectives report in the arrest warrant that witnesses told officers the suspects fled in a black and tan Ford pickup truck. That same truck—reported stolen—was found abandoned less than an hour later, not far from the scene, according to police.

Live Oak Police brought in the Texas Rangers to assist in the investigation.

Through witness statements and surveillance evidence, investigators learned that a second vehicle, a red Dodge Caliber, was seen speeding away from the murder scene along with the black and tan pickup truck, according to police documents.

Detectives eventually traced that Dodge Caliber to Gladney. According to the arrest warrant, Gladney was also spotted driving the vehicle near the area where the stolen truck was abandoned.

Further evidence reportedly showed the stolen truck had been seen at Gladney’s apartment in the days leading up to the murder, according to investigators with the Texas Rangers.

According to the arrest warrant, investigators believe Gladney helped the four gunmen escape from the scene of the murder and abandon the pickup truck used in the deadly attack.

So far, the Texas Rangers have not released any names or details regarding the four suspected shooters. It is also unclear if any additional arrests have been made, or if Live Oak police and the Texas Rangers have identified any additional suspects.

Another individual was arrested at the crime scene on an unrelated outstanding warrant but has not been charged in connection to Roy’s death, according to online court documents.

The investigation remains ongoing.
