Suspect running from police crashes into the back of an East Central ISD school bus, officials say

A 21-year-old driver, fleeing law enforcement, collided with a school bus in Bexar County, Texas; fortunately, no one was seriously injured.

SAN ANTONIO — A driver fleeing law enforcement Friday morning ended up hitting the back of a school bus at Loop 410 on the northeast side.

Law enforcement began responding to the incident around 9 a.m. Friday morning.

The incident began with a chase involving a black Ford Explorer coming into Bexar County from a neighboring county along U.S. 87. Law enforcement lost sight of the vehicle until DPS troopers caught up with it. A trooper tried to stop the Explorer and it ended up colliding with the back of an East Central ISD school bus near the intersection of Loop 410 and U.S. 87.

At that point, officials say the suspect took off on foot and was arrested by troopers on a nearby Walmart parking lot.

The 21-year-old suspect, Brandon Xavior Cortina, had a warrant out of Victoria County and is now facing several additional charges.

East Central ISD says there were 23 students and two adults on the bus and none were seriously harmed. They were reportedly a group of theater students on their way to a one-act play competition. Some of them complained of some soreness and were taken back to the campus for evaluation by the school nurse. The school district reports that the students were still enthusiastic about carrying on with the competition.

This is a developing story and further details will be added as they are received.
