Suspect shoots, kills self during standoff after firing at deputies, BCSO says

A suspect in Bexar County shot at deputies and then killed himself during a standoff, officials said.

SAN ANTONIO — A suspect shot and killed himself Tuesday morning after shooting at deputies at a home in northeast Bexar County, officials said.

The incident happened at a home in the 8000 block of Wayword Trail around 11:15 a.m. A family member had called and asked to check on the man in the home.

Sheriff Javier Salazar, who spoke to media at the scene, said the suspect had been involved in a crash and was distraught outside of the home. At some point, the suspect began firing at deputies who were approaching. The deputies jumped out of their vehicle, took cover and were not hurt.

The suspect went back into the home and deputies tried to make contact with him. Sheriff Salazar said the deputies pleaded with him to put the gun down. BCSO said the suspect shot and killed himself.

“Any loss of life is absolutely tragic. And while we are thankful that our deputies were not injured, the truth is there is still one family here that is changed forever,” Sheriff Salazar said. “We certainly want that family to know that we are here for them. But for the community, we want them to know we’ve got great first responders here in the area.”

Sheriff Salazar said the San Antonio Police Department may be investigating the initial crash that led up to the incident.

The deputies involved will be placed on administrative duty while the situation is investigated.

This is a developing story, and further details will be added as they are received.
