Suspected car thieves shoot convenience store clerk in stomach, police say

Police say the two suspects, who were wearing hoodies, took off running into a nearby neighborhood.

A convenience store clerk was found shot on the north side of town and police say they believe the suspects involved were suspected car thieves.

SAPD responded to the 1700 block of Encino Rio not far from Evans Road around 12:40 a.m. on Tuesday for reports of a robbery.

When officers arrived at the EZ Mart, they found the store clerk with a gunshot wound to his abdomen. He was taken to University Hospital.

Police say the two suspects, who were wearing hoodies, took off running into a nearby neighborhood.

Officers did locate an abandoned car nearby on Encino Summit that may have been related to the shooting. Police say the driver of that vehicle had been carjacked earlier in the day on Nacogdoches Road and O’Connor Road on the northeast side of town.

Police also said when the suspects ditched the stolen car, they left in a white Toyota Corolla they believe was also involved in the carjacking.

This is a developing story.
