Suspected road rage leads to crash, gunfire east of downtown San Antonio, police say

Police said an 18-year-old driver told officers the suspect clipped the front of his vehicle, causing him to crash. Moments later, he said he heard gunshots.

SAN ANTONIO — An early-morning road-rage incident led to a crash and gunfire east of downtown on Saturday, according to the San Antonio Police Department.

Police were called around 5:15 a.m. to the 1500 block of North New Braunfels Avenue for a shooting-in-progress. Upon arrival, investigators said they found two vehicles, a black BMW and a gray Ford F-150, wrecked at the scene.

The 18-year-old driver of the BMW told officers the driver of the Ford F-150 had been “road raging” before intentionally trying to crash into him, SAPD said.

The BMW driver said the suspect clipped the front of his vehicle, causing him to crash. Moments later, he said he heard gunshots and ran from the scene.

Witnesses told police they saw the suspect get out of the gray truck, which investigators later determined was stolen. He reportedly ran in the same direction as the victim while carrying what appeared to be a long gun.

Officers later detained the 23-year-old suspect and found him in possession of a gun light but no firearm, according to investigators.

Police said the BMW had bullet holes, though no injuries were reported.

This is an ongoing investigation.
