SUV flips into Houston bayou but it’s what the driver did next that shocked police

A major crash in north Houston left several, including children, injured after one vehicle flipped into a bayou.

HOUSTON — A major crash involving two vehicles left several injured, including children, in north Houston Tuesday night, according to Houston police Lt. Larry Crowson.

It happened around 9 p.m. on Yale Street, south of West Tidwell Road.

Houston police Capt. Ryan Watson with the North Division said a Ford Expedition was seen on nearby surveillance footage traveling at a high rate of speed, possibly 100 mph.

A Chevrolet Avalanche that was in the right lane tried to make a right turn and ended up striking the SUV, which was in the left lane, causing it to flip into a bayou.

Watson said the driver of the SUV was picked up by another vehicle and left the scene, leaving behind his wife and four children.

“I have no idea what’s going through his mind at the time. I don’t know if there’s some other reason he felt he needed to flee, but the investigators here are following down leads and they’re going to track that down to see if they can talk to him to get some answers, find out what’s going on,” Watson said.

All five passengers, including a woman and four children, were transported to the hospital. The oldest of the children, an 8-year-old, was thrown from the SUV. Two victims are in serious condition, while the other three remain in critical condition.

They are all expected to survive their injuries, according to Watson.

Watson said the driver of the Avalanche, the other vehicle involved in the crash, remained at the scene and was cooperative with authorities. A dog that was thrown from the Avalanche was later found.

“Looks like everybody’s going to survive this accident, but really, just, people have got to slow down. Crashes like this are completely avoidable,” Watson said.

Authorities continue to investigate and are asking anyone with information on the driver of the Ford Expedition to come forward.
