SAN ANTONIO — An SUV became stuck in a hole in the road near Jefferson High School on the near northwest side Saturday afternoon. SAWS officials said it was due to a water main break.
The incident happened just before 2 p.m. on Wilson Drive, near the intersection with Donaldson Avenue.
A SAWS official said a 12-inch water main break caused the road to buckle, creating a large hole. An SUV driver says he noticed a lot of water but didn’t think much of it and drove through. The SUV became stuck in the hole.
The driver said two people helped him climb out of the vehicle’s window. No one was hurt in the incident. The driver said he was not sure if the vehicle caused the hole or if the hole was already there.
A SAWS official said aging infrastucture in this older neighborhood may be to blame.
“When you have a catastrophic failure on a main like that, it’s older infrastructure…you are going to have subsurface damage like this. Unfortunately, it’s a part of what happens when you have older infrastructure,” Ryan Taylor of SAWS said.
Taylor said the water in the area had to be cut off for the repair and it would take about four to five hours for the water to be turned back on. He said the road would be repaired and reopened in about six hours.
