Swatting call briefly caused Uvalde schools to go into ‘secure status,’ district says

Uvalde CISD briefly placed two elementary schools on secure status after receiving a concerning call about an individual in a parking lot.

SAN ANTONIO — Uvalde CISD briefly placed two elementary schools on a “secure status” Wednesday after a swatting incident, according to district leaders.

The interruption impacted both Legacy and Dalton elementary schools. Interim Superintendent Juan Hinojosa said in a message posted to social media that an “incoherent” phone call was received, apparently “reporting the presence of an individual in the parking lot” of Legacy Elementary, which just opened last fall.

It was later found to be a swatting call, referring to a hoax report of an emergency situation to try and prompt a response.

“Our law enforcement partners have confirmed that similar incidents have been reported throughout Texas,” Hinojosa wrote in his message. “These types of incidents can significantly impact daily routines and affect our collective sense of safety.”

Secure status meant no one was allowed in or out of the campuses while authorities investigated. It was lifted around 1:20 p.m. after about 50 minutes. The parking lots of several schools, including Legacy and Uvalde High School, were checked and secured.
