Sweet victory: San Antonio-based bakery earns national recognition for best donuts

San Antonio’s Southern Roots Vegan Bakery was named a winner in Good Housekeeping’s 2025 Best Snack Awards for its vanilla cake donuts.

SAN ANTONIO — A San Antonio-based bakery has been nationally recognized for its delectable treats, being named a winner in Good Housekeeping’s 2025 Best Snack Awards.

Southern Roots Vegan Bakery is a Black-owned bakery that specializes in handcrafted, allergen-friendly desserts —shipping gourmet vegan donuts, cookies and cakes nationwide.

Good Housekeeping revealed the winners of its 2025 Best Snack Awards, with Southern Roots earning the title of best donuts in the country for their fan-favorite vanilla cake donuts.

Here’s how the winners were chosen. 

Good Housekeeping says it weighed creative, delicious and nutritious options that prioritize the following criteria:

  • Made with real and recognizable ingredients you can pronounce
  • Highlight fiber-filled and protein-rich sources
  • Free from trans fat and partially hydrogenated oils
  • No artificial flavors or food dyes
  • 300 calories or less per serving
  • 10 g of added sugar or less per serving
  • 400 mg sodium or less per serving

Among the winners in the Sweet Snacks category was none other than San Antonio’s own Southern Roots Vegan Bakery.

Good Housekeeping says the “perfectly moist and indulgent” treat are surprisingly vegan but don’t compromise on taste or texture. Southern Roots’ donuts are baked, not fried and made using oat milk and other plant-based ingredients.
