‘Talk to your kids about guns’ | Bystander hit by stray bullet during shooting in southeast SA pushes for gun safety

Jonas, who did not want to share his last name, was the third victim. Police said he was minding his own business when the stray bullet struck him in the shoulder.

SAN ANTONIO — An innocent man shot by a stray bullet while cooking dinner Monday night is speaking out. The shooting claimed the life of a 17-year-old and injured another person.

Jonas, who did not want to share his last name, was the third victim. Police said he was minding his own business when the stray bullet struck him in the shoulder.

The shooting happened just after 9 p.m. off Schley Avenue on January 6. San Antonio Police said the shooting was between a group of people meeting up for some sort of transaction.

Jonas watched from the hospital room a report by KENS 5 about the incident and reached out to us to share his story.

“Randomly getting shot is the worst thing that can happen to you in any way shape or form,” Jonas said.

Jonas, who is just 20 years old, said he is still processing what happened. He said he has lived in his home for about a year and felt safe until now.

“I can’t do my work anymore, I can’t go do what I love to do anymore,” Jonas said. “I just got handicapped within 20 seconds from what I like to do in my everyday life.”

Jonas said he was cooking dinner for his girlfriend when it happened. They were both in the kitchen when the bullet came through a window. He said at first, he heard a loud boom.

“I realized the sound was the bullet hitting me,” Jonas said.

Jonas said the bullet entered through his back and fractured a bone near his shoulder. He said the bullet is still inside his body. He anticipates he will be out of work for several months since he does manual labor for a living.

“I prayed to God, and I told him thankful because if I would have done this in front of my stove, it would have been my spine and I wouldn’t be here talking to y’all at all right now,” Jonas said.

Jonas believes too many young people are getting their hands on guns and using them recklessly, especially in highly populated areas.

“Like just fight, fist fight like they used to do,” Jonas said. “Don’t shoot, you know what I mean. It’s way less intrusive on everybody.”

He said he never thought he would be a victim himself but said after what happened, he felt it was important to share this message.

“Parents, please talk to your kids about guns,” Jonas said. “That’s all it takes, that one little conversation  for your kid not to cause harm to you your family, yourself or others.”

SAPD have not made any arrests in the case. They also have not released any information about possible suspects. We are also waiting to learn the identity of the teen who was killed.

Meanwhile, Jonas has set up a GoFundMe to help with medical expenses. If you would like to help, click here.
