The teacher who passed away has been identified as 22-year-old Alexia Rosales. The five children involved were all 1 year old, according to BCSO.
SAN ANTONIO — A young female faculty member was killed in a car crash at a Scenic Oaks daycare and preschool Thursday afternoon, officials say. A second teacher and five children were hospitalized, while another adult and two children were reportedly treated and released on the scene.
The teacher who died was a 22-year-old woman later identified as Alexia Rosales. Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar called the crash a “tragic accident” that isn’t believed to have involved intoxication. It unfolded after a holiday performance at the ExcellED Montessori Plus Daycare Preschool, located along the Interstate 10 West Frontage Road near Ranchland View.
Salazar said a parent had loaded her children into her car when “for whatever reason, she accelerated into another car.”
“Both cars ended up hitting a fence, where on the other side several children were playing and one faculty member was there as well,” he said, adding the unidentified teacher was “pinned under the vehicle for some time.”
The conditions of the children vary, according to the sheriff, and were all take to a local hospital. All children involved are confirmed to be 1 year old. The other employee involved, 23, was also taken to the hospital.
The driver believed to have caused the crash just before 4 p.m. has a past medical history that officials say “may have contributed to this, but at this point we don’t believe it has anything to do with intoxication or any sort of criminality.”
The facility primarily services young children and families in the San Antonio and Boerne areas. A spokesperson for ExcellED Montessori said the school community was “united in grief” and working to support those affected.
“We are working closely with local authorities as they investigate this incident and will continue to prioritize the safety and well-being of the children in our care as well as our staff and families,” the spokesperson said. “Counseling and support services are being made available to anyone in need. We ask for your thoughts and prayers for everyone affected and respectfully request privacy for the families as they navigate this devastating time.”
The Medical Examiner’s Office later identified the deceased teacher as 22-year-old Alexia Rosales.
