Authorities said it didn’t appear intoxication was a factor in Thursday’s incident.
SAN ANTONIO — A young faculty member was killed and five children hurt after a car crash at a Scenic Oaks daycare and preschool Thursday afternoon, officials say.
The teacher was a woman in her 20s, according to Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar, who called the crash a “tragic accident” that isn’t believed to have involved intoxication. It unfolded after a holiday performance at the ExcellED Montessori Plus Daycare Preschool, located along the Interstate 10 West Frontage Road near Ranchland View.
Salazar said a parent had loaded her children into her car when “for whatever reason, she accelerated into another car.”
“Both cars ended up hitting a fence, where on the other side several children were playing and one faculty member was there as well,” he said, adding the unidentified teacher was “pinned under the vehicle for some time.”
The conditions of the children vary, according to the sheriff. Their exact ages are unknown.
The driver believed to have caused the crash just before 4 p.m. has a past medical history that officials say “may have contributed to this, but at this point we don’t believe it has anything to do with intoxication or any sort of criminality.”

The facility primarily services young children and families in the San Antonio and Boerne areas. Two lanes of I-10 East are closed, according to the Texas Department of Transportation.
“The school administrators and law enforcement are focused at this time on caring for the children, teachers, and families affected by the incident,” a spokesperson said.
This is a developing story.
