‘Teacher of the year’ recalls surviving Robb Elementary shooting in email part of newly released documents

Lynn Deming emailed Uvalde CISD officials about her experience as she protected her students from bullets that blew through classroom windows.

UVALDE, Texas — The law firm representing Uvalde CISD has released another batch of documents just days after admitting to making a mistake by failing to release all the records at once two weeks ago.

The records are a part of a media-led lawsuit going back to 2022 in a push toward transparency following the botched response by law enforcement to take down the gunman who killed 19 children and two teachers at Robb Elementary School.

Uvalde County and the City of Uvalde have released thousands of documents tied to the litigation, which included law enforcement body-cam video and school records of the teenaged gunman.

Among the thousands of pages of new records includes an email from at-the-time Robb Elementary teacher of the year Lynn Deming. The fourth grade teacher reached out to the district regarding her harrowing experience on May 24, 2022.

The June 2022 addressed email revealed that Deming heard gunshots outside the school and did everything she could to ensure the safety of her students.

A portion of the email stated: “As I closed the door between our classrooms gunshots came through my windows. I fell on the floor and began knocking desks over onto my legs so I wouldn’t make noise, but I could block the students from bullets…I knew I would die that day. I had shrapnel in my back from when he shot in my window. I had blood all over the back of me, but I tried to stay calm for my students.”

Deming’s email also expressed frustration about transparency and an absence of unity with the school district.

“We were asked to be patient and understanding, so I have but it feels as if the Rodd (Robb) staff that survived, especially us in that 4th grade building are being ignored. It feels like our sacrifice and pain doesn’t matter,” Deming said.

Among the documents, there are also messages of support, which includes an email from one student who survived the Oxford High School shooting in Michigan in November 2021.

A teenaged gunman killed four students and injured seven people, including a teacher. The gunman was sentenced to life in prison. In the email, the student noted she set up a GoFundMe campaign to donate stuffed animals to Robb Elementary students and staff.

Another email came from a businessman in North Carolina who offered to donate his active alert security system to Uvalde CISD at no cost for an entire year.

More than 10,000 more documents from Uvalde CISD’s law firm are still expected to be released by Sept. 3.
