The North East ISD Board decided they will close three school in the 2025-2026 school year.
SAN ANTONIO — A multi-million-dollar deficit and decline in enrollment is forcing North East ISD to close three of its schools.
The decision was made by the school board in a meeting late last night.
KENS 5 spoke with a teacher from Wilshire Elementary, one of the schools being closed, who said this didn’t come as a shock.
Dezmian Lugo now teaches in the same school where she once wrote about her dreams, while her sister Emma who is in second grade followed the same legacy.
“There’s some days where we’ll have lunch together and we’ll just eat the two of us,” Lugo said.
The impending closure will mean a goodbye to those moments.
“There has been a huge decline in enrolment,” she added. “One grade level used to take up an entire hallway.”
Now she said multiple grades fill the same space.
Declining enrollment was a point made in the board meeting that drew late into the night Monday.
With a 39-million-dollar deficit the school board decided closing Clear Spring and Wilshire Elementary schools as well as Driscoll Middle would help save $5 million.
“I do wish there was more time to process it,” Lugo said. “I’m sure that’s how everyone feels… Our students will continue to grow and be taught by the right people.”
But for Lugo and the little one who follows in her footsteps, a positive outlook is all they need in a time of so many unknowns.
