Teen shot during robbery attempt seeks help at Universal City coffee shop, witnesses say

A teen was shot during a robbery attempt at Villa Mesa Apartments in Universal City, police say.

UNIVERSAL CITY, Texas — At On the Grind coffee shop on Pat Booker Road in Universal City, they were preparing for an ordinary day when that plan ground to a sudden halt.

Witnesses said a teenager who had been shot during a robbery attempt nearby stumbled up to the drive through line asking for help.

Molly Irish said of the frightening encounter “I’m glad that we were here and we were open and we were able to help.”

Irish said the victim had been shot an unknown number of times at the Villa Mesa Apartments nearby and was trying to get away from an armed assailant.

Workers called 911 and Irish said first responders arrived very quickly.

Irish said the teen, who they believe to be about 15, was shot when an internet meetup plan turned violent around 6 a.m.

“It sounds like he was meeting a girl over there at the apartments and that’s when things went south,” Irish said.

Universal City Police Chief Johnny Siemens texted an update that reads “So far, victim is telling us it was a robbery. He set up to meet a girl online and they got robbed and shot.”

Siemens promised additional information would be shared on Facebook shortly, but later said he was out of town.

A short post on Facebook by the Universal City Police Department early in the day stated simply:

“Earlier this morning officers responded to the area of Villa Mesa for a shooting victim that was found near by. The individual was transported to the hospital. There is no threat to the community at this time. This investigation is still on going.”
