SAN ANTONIO — A teenager from Kansas is making it her mission to never forget the 21 lives lost at Robb Elementary School on May 24, 2022. Sammie Magee was 15-years-old when the shooting happened in Uvalde.
“They have no voices anymore,” she said. “And I am going to continue screaming as a loud as I can until their voices are heard and their stories are heard.”
She has no connection to the small Texas town.
“I have never heard of Uvalde until May 24, 2022,” she said.
However, the teen felt like she had to do something.
“We are called to serve,” she said. “And I just felt called.”
Soon after she started Sammie’s Toy Drive, and her mission is to spread love and show support.
“I made it my purpose to honor them and carry on their legacies,” Magee said.
She hosts toy drives for people impacted by tragedy, and she does so in honor of the 21.
“We are honoring the 21 one toy at a time,” Magee said. “So, we help in Uvalde. Uvalde is very low income, while honoring the kids, out in Kansas we have done two toy drives, about to be three. It is sharing the 21’s kindness all 851 miles away.”
Magee now 18-years-old flew in Friday night into San Antonio. She will be speaking Saturday in Uvalde as part of the community’s candlelight vigil.
“I have to be here for them,” she said. “They are my family.”
At such a young age Magee leading with her heart saying anyone can make a difference.
“Be the ripple,” she said. “You might be doing something small. But, it starts a ripple.”
Magee said later this year, she will host her third toy drive in Uvalde in November. If would like to help, click here.
