Tejano artist David Lee Garza released from San Antonio hospital after health scare

He was admitted to Baptist Hospital on Friday after his label said he was experiencing fatigue.

SAN ANTONIO — Tejano musician and Poteet native David Lee Garza says he looks forward to trading the hospital bed for the stage this weekend after he was admitted to Baptist Hospital in downtown San Antonio on Friday.

Garza, 68, was being treated for fluid buildup in his lungs after experiencing shortness of breath and fatigue, according to his label Freddie Records. The development meant his band, David Lee Garza y Los Musicales, was forced to cancel some weekend gigs.

But Garza said in a new video message posted by Freddie Records that he was released on Sunday after his condition improved.

“I feel very blessed to have you all – my fans and friends – behind me with all your prayers and blessings,” Garza said, with another message of thanks to the staff at Baptist Hospital. “I can’t wait to get back onstage this coming weekend somewhere here in Texas.”

He won’t be going very far this week: He’s scheduled to perform at this weekend’s Barbacoa & Big Red Festival on Saturday.

The frontman and accordionist of David Lee Garza y Los Musicales, Garza has frequently performed at San Antonio-area festivals and won the Latin Grammy for Best Tejano Album in 2013—just one highlight of a decadeslong career. A household name in the genre, his group is credited with having helped launch the careers of renowned artists like Ram Herrera, Emilio Navaira and Jay Perez.
