A college student awoke to the sound of someone trying to pry her door open early Sunday morning. She is frustrated the perpetrator is not facing charges.
SAN ANTONIO — A college student says she’s living in fear after a half-naked man tried to enter her apartment. It happened just before 5 a.m. on Sunday at the Dalian 151 Apartments on Ingram Road.
The 22-year-old, who wished not to be identified for her safety, called the incident “terrifying.”
“I’m young, I live on my own,” she said. “I was sleeping and everything was quiet. I heard my door rattle, and I second guessed it. I heard it again, and I second guessed it one more time. Then I heard it a third time and I thought, ‘That’s my door!’ It was followed by a small knock.”
Surveillance video captured a man, who was wearing only an undershirt, trying several times to turn the doorknob on the woman’s apartment. He then uses both hands and leans back in an apparent attempt to pry the door open.
That man is seen trying to enter at least one other person’s apartment in the same building.
The college student recorded cellphone video as she confronted the man. She can be heard asking, “Were you trying to open my door?”
“Oh my God, hell no,” he laughs while trying to cover his genitals.
The woman called police.
“Come to find out he is actually staying a few doors down,” she said. “And the female that lives there opened the door and claimed he was sleepwalking. So, [officers] said they couldn’t do anything.”
She was hoping the perpetrator would be cited for public indecency and attempted breaking and entering. However, the woman claims the two offers left without arresting the man on any charges.
“I had plain proof of him fully trying to break my door and they just told me, ‘Do whatever you need to do to protect yourself,’” she said. “I pay a decent amount of money to live here and I am not comfortable in my own home. I have to walk in and out of my apartment looking over my shoulder, carrying mace. Police expect the person to be completely injured or something traumatic before something is done. It’s not okay.”
The 22-year-old is ready to move out but claims the apartment management is refusing to let her out of her lease.
“Sleepwalking or not, that’s still putting someone in danger,” she said. “If he would have come in, who is to say what he would have done.”
The San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) is looking into the incident. Meanwhile, KENS 5 reached out to Greystar Property Management for comment, and we are waiting to hear back.
