Texans Davis’ Mills, who is now 3-0 as a starter, says he knows his role with team

Mills and head coach DeMeco Ryans were both asked about the team’s quarterback situation after Houston’s win.

HOUSTON — The Houston Texans (6-5) kept their playoff hopes alive on Thursday night by beating the Bills at NRG Stadium in front of a national audience.  It was the third straight Houston win behind backup quarterback Davis Mills. Mills has been in for starter C.J. Stroud, who’s been out since suffering a concussion in a loss to the Denver Broncos.

So, when Stroud is out of the concussion protocol, is there a quarterback controversy?  No, says Mills.

“[QB] C.J. [Stroud] is the starter for this team,” Mills was quick to say after Houston’s 23-19 win. “I’m just doing everything I can to bring my best foot forward every day, make everyone else around me better and try to provide and play my role to my best ability when I get thrown in there.”

Mills was 16 of 30 against the Bills for 153 yards and two touchdowns and no interceptions. The Houston offensive line kept him from being sacked. For the season, Mills is 88 of 150 for 879 yards.  He has five total TD passes and one rushing TD to go with one interception.

Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans was asked about Stroud’s availability for next Sunday’s key divisional matchup against Indianapolis. Ryans focused on No. 7’s health, but said he’s ready to return.

“It was great to see him back out there,” Ryans said. “He was back at practice. Just to see him back around the guys with a huge smile on his face, him feeling well, that’s the most important thing. When our guys are in the concussion protocol, I want to make sure they’re healthy and they’re well. That’s the one thing I’m most happy to see. He’s well, he’s himself and ready to get back to football.”

Before his concussion, Stroud was 161 of 342 for 1,702 yards. He threw 11 touchdown passes against five interceptions.
