Texans’ offense so far among the worst in recent NFL history

The Houston Texans rank third-worst in scoring through three weeks of the 2025 NFL season, with only 12.7 points per game.

HOUSTON — Three weeks into the 2025 NFL season, the Houston Texans are averaging just 12.7 points per game — and the early results place them in historically poor company.

According to data from the last 15 seasons compiled by KHOU 11 News, only two teams have posted a lower scoring average through a full year: the 2011 St. Louis Rams (12.1) and the 2010 Carolina Panthers (12.3). The Texans’ current mark ties them for third-worst over that span, alongside some of the least successful teams in recent memory.

Here’s a look at the six lowest-scoring teams from the last 15 years, based on full-season averages:

  • 2011 Rams – 12.1 ppg (2-14)
  • 2010 Panthers – 12.3 ppg (2-14)
  • 2025 Texans – 12.7 ppg (0-3)*
  • 2012 Chiefs – 13.2 ppg (2-14)
  • 2011 Chiefs – 13.3 ppg (7-9)
  • 2011 Browns – 13.6 ppg (4-12)

 *Through Week 3

Four of those teams, the 2011 Rams, 2010 Panthers, 2025 Texans, and 2011 Chiefs, started their seasons 0-3. Only the 2012 Chiefs and 2011 Browns managed to avoid a 0-3 start, though both still finished with losing records.

Houston’s offensive struggles have drawn criticism from fans and analysts alike. Former Texans defensive lineman Seth Payne said on Sports Extra Sunday night that a seven-win season is still possible, but only if the team finds explosive plays and wins the turnover battle.

“Seven wins is something that could come by with a few deep strikes to Nico Collins and if the turnovers and takeaways start coming in,” Payne, from SportsRadio 610, said.

But recent history suggests otherwise. Of the five previous teams listed above, none made the playoffs, and only one, the 2011 Chiefs, managed to win more than four games. Kansas City won seven.

The Texans (0-3) face the challenge of not only improving their offensive production but also reversing a trajectory that has historically led to high draft picks, not postseason berths.
