Texans weighing options for where to move their practice facility

Team execs talked Monday not only about the practice facility, but the state of NRG Stadium.

HOUSTON — Texans owner Cal McNair says the state of their current facilities at NRG just doesn’t cut it. He’s now talking about the possibility of a new practice facility somewhere in the greater Houston area.

Cal McNair and Texans Foundation Vice President Hannah McNair talked to the media Monday at the Texans Charity Golf Classic, giving an update on plans for their desired practice facility and headquarters, saying they’re open to putting it somewhere within the greater Houston area.

Houston is one of only a handful of NFL teams without a separate practice facility.

“It’s a complicated kind of a mixture, but with the practice facility, we’re working on that almost every day,” McNair said. “What’s great is we’re OK where we are and so that’s our starting point and then, would we move out? Yeah, we would move out and do a brand new one somewhere.”

Team President Mike Tomon said a new facility could include an entertainment district, something the Cowboys have in their 91-acre ‘The Star’ campus.

“We really see that there’s a great way that we can impact the community, in a great way to make sure that it’s a destination, it’s an asset for the community,” he said.

As for the ongoing conversations surrounding NRG Stadium renovations, the Texans, who are tenants, are saying this.

“The county has done studies because it is the county and we’re renters, like you rent a house or an apartment, and what has happened over time is it’s fallen behind on its maintenance,” McNair said.

The Texans’ NRG Stadium lease expires in 2032.
