An Uber driver is no longer working for the company after he allegedly ran over a child that was just a few months shy of their birthday. The driver, identified by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office as Muhammad Khan, is at the center of an investigation into the death of a 1-year-old toddler that occurred after Khan dropped off a family at an apartment complex in Houston on Sunday, March 17, according to a news release.

Khan drove his silver 2018 Volkswagen Atlas into the apartment complex parking lot and parked to let the passengers out of the vehicle, which included the 1-year-old. An adult passenger that exited the right side of the vehicle then walked in front of it with the 1-year-old. The news release says that Khan couldn’t see the toddler in front of the vehicle and proceeded to drive forward, allegedly running the child over.

Khan reportedly stopped the vehicle when the child was ran over but the toddler was pinned in the left rear tire. This is when other people at the apartments, including two adult passengers that were in the Uber, tried to remove the toddler from tire. Khan attempted to move the vehicle as well but told the sheriff’s office that witnesses were  allegedly “assaulting him and pulling him from the vehicle.”

An unknown person then moved the car and adults from the apartment took the child to a nearby gas station where they were met by emergency services. The toddler was transported to HCA – Kingwood Medical Center where they later died. Khan stayed on scene and is cooperating with the investigation. The news release says Khan did not seem impaired at the time.

The news release says that the toddler was “almost” 2 years old. Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez posted on X, formerly know as Twitter, that the toddler was just a few months shy from their second birthday. MySA reached out to Uber for comment and to see if the driver is still employed with Uber.
