Texas A&M Head Coach Jimbo Fisher out of a job but not a paycheck

On Sunday, Texas A&M University announced the firing of head coach Jimbo Fisher following a shaky season.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Tonight, Texas A&M University is on the hunt for its newest head coach. In a surprise announcement Sunday morning, the University announced the firing of former head coach Jimbo Fisher.

Even after six years of leading the Aggies football program, Texas A&M never won ten games in a season during Fisher’s tenure. Even with Saturday’s blowout win over Mississippi State, it wasn’t enough to save Fisher after six seasons of mixed results and a nine-game losing streak, many saw his termination as inevitable. Including Athletic Director Ross Bjork who stated that the program needed a change, announcing it was time for A&M to raise its expectations.

“Our program is stuck in neutral,” said Bjork. “We should be relevant on the national scene, something is not clicking, something is not working, something had to give, for Aggie football to reach our full potential.”

As the buzz of Fisher’s firing continues to make its way around the SEC an even bigger surprise came to the fans of Texas A&M football, when the university announced it will have to pay Fisher 76 million dollars to buy out his contract.

But where exactly will this million-dollar buyout come from? According to Bjork, university funds.

“This will only involve athletics and 12th man foundation funds. We will use unrestricted contributions within the 12th man foundation for the first one-time payment and the athletic department will fund the annual payments for the remaining portion.”

The buyout of Fisher goes down in history as the largest buyout in college football history.

For now, Elijah Robinson has been named A&M’s interim head coach for the remainder of the season.
