COLLEGE STATION, Texas — It appears Mike Elko will remain at the helm of Texas A&M’s football program as CBS Sports and ESPN report contract extension is being finalized.
According to the report, the extension, which could be announced as early as Saturday, would make Elko one of the 10 highest-paid coaches in college football.
The details of the extension weren’t immediately available, but CBS Sports reported Elko currently makes about $7 million annually prior to the extension. The report suggests Elko will see a “substantial increase in guaranteed compensation,” citing Yahoo Sports.
Since taking over in November 2023, Elko has led the Aggies to a 17-5 overall record and went into Saturday’s matchup against the South Carolina Gamecocks with a 9-0 record on the season. The team sits at No. 3 on the AP Top 25 College Football Poll.
Before he came to College Station, Elko served as head coach at Duke for two seasons, where he led the Blue Devils to back-to-back bowl games.
He’s no stranger to Aggieland either. Prior to leading Duke, Elko served as the Aggies’ defensive coordinator and safeties coach from 2018 to 2021, helping the team reach four straight bowl games.
Shortly after the reports of the extension surfaced, Elko’s Aggies found themselves in trouble at home against South Carolina. Texas A&M trailed the Gamecocks, 30-3 at halftime at Kyle Field. The Aggies then turned it on in the second half, coming back to take a 31-30 lead in the fourth quarter.
