The trade would grow the rocket-launching facility by 43 non-contiguous acres coming out of the Boca Chica State Park in Cameron County, according to a news release. In return, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) could receive 477 acres of land and have the opportunity to create a nearly 500-acre park.

“This is an exciting opportunity to acquire land that has been of interest to us and the conservation community for many years,” said TPWD Executive Director David Yoskowitz in the release. “We look forward to working with Cameron County, city and state officials as well as the public to develop a shared vision for Bahia Grande that enhances conservation and expands recreational opportunities for all Texans, both now and in the future.”

The 477 acres of land TPWD is looking to acquire is near Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge, which is described as one of the most “biologically diverse” areas in North America, according to the release. The new state park will have areas for fishing, kayaking, wildlife viewing, hiking, biking, and more.

The 43 acres of land SpaceX would get in the deal do not connect to each other or any public access at Boca Chica State Park, according to the release. There is also no beach access. The land isn’t ideal for a “cohesive” wildlife habitat and isn’t available for public use, the state reports.

Some wildlife and nature advocates had voiced opposition, and for a time had the county seat on their side. However, Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño Jr.’s stance switched from his previous position against the land exchange, which was because he initially felt TPWD was leaving the county “in the dark.”

But after being included, the county judge said the swap was “not only well-intentioned but also necessary for the long-term health and vitality of Cameron County,” according to a MySA report.
