Cloudy skies will accompany the marquee Fiesta event, but no rain is expected.
SAN ANTONIO — The first of Fiesta’s three major parades – and the only one to bring colorful sights to the San Antonio River – returns Monday evening, without any expected showers to dampen the mood.
The Texas Cavaliers River Parade is scheduled to set off at 7 p.m., likely bringing tens of thousands downtown to line the River Walk and catch a glimpse of this year’s decorative floats. Charlie Duk, the Apollo 16 astronaut who in 1972 became the youngest person to walk on the moon, is serving as grand marshal.
Fiesta organizers introduced the parade in 1941 after the Texas Cavaliers – a charity-minded group of community leaders which also seeks to preserve “the bravery and independence for which the heroes of the Alamo died” – observed a floating parade of flower-adorned boats in Mexico City.
The parade of nearly 50 floats sets out at 7 p.m. from near Hotel Havan before winding down into the more traditionally populated sections of the River Walk. If you’re set up in the area of Market and Alamo, or at Shops at Rivercenter, you can expect to start seeing the floats between 7:30 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. Those grabbing a bite at restaurants along Crockett Street and Press can expect to start seeing them between 7:45 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Tickets are still being sold for a limited number of reserved seats along the parade route. For visitors with disabilities, there are areas where you’ll be able to access the River walk to be close to the action.
And, if you’re driving downtown, make note of these road closures to avoid any traffic headaches.
