CONVERSE, Texas — A couple is accused of dumping and abandoning their dog right outside the Converse Animal Care Facility. Converse Animal Services Manager Joel Skidmore said this is now a criminal investigation.
“Ignorance of the law is not a reason to break it,” he said.
On Sunday, a couple is accused of dumping their dog right outside of the closed facility.
“They open the door,” he said. “They let the dog out. It is running around, and they then capture it and get the kennel out.”
Minutes later, Skidmore said the couple takes off. Cooper a pit bull mix was left dumped right outside.
“It is under our Texas state law, under our city ordinances that unreasonable abandonment is a fine, it is a crime,” he said.
Skidmore said the couple should have done things differently.
“Give us the option to be able to have that conversation about what we can do for you,” he said. “Call us. Let us explain. Okay, we may not have space today. But, I can reserve a kennel space for you on this day. Just doing what they did is inappropriate. It is against the law.”
It wasn’t long after Cooper was abandoned, a police officer driving by the city of Converse facility noticed the dog. Skidmore said the dog was immediately checked out by the medical team and is doing fine.
“He is looking for another chance,” he said. “He is looking for another home.”
The city animal department is working with Converse police. Skidmore said this is an active investigation and that police are looking for the two people. He said they could face fines and possible jail time.
