Texas dominates Texas Tech, wins first ever softball national championship

The Longhorns got to Red Raiders starter NiJaree Canady early, and never looked back as they clinched their first national championship in program history.

AUSTIN, Texas — The Texas Longhorns are national champions in softball.

The Longhorns crushed Texas Tech 10-4 in Game 3 to claim the school’s first ever national championship in the sport.

The Longhorns threw Teagan Kavan in Game 3 to matchup with Texas Tech’s NiJaree Canady, who was starting her third consecutive game.

It was clear that Canady, who had presented problems for the Longhorns in games 1 and 2, was dealing with fatigue from the start, and the Longhorns took advantage, scoring five runs on five hits in the first inning to take an immediate stranglehold on the game that would not be overcome. Canady was pulled after just one inning of work.

The Longhorns ultimately built a lopsided 10-run lead on the back of a Mia Scott grand slam in the fourth inning. The Red Raiders were able to score a handful of runs late, but the Longhorns ultimately cruised to their first national championship in program history.

All but only two Longhorns starters recorded a hit in Friday’s game, and Teagan Kavan shut the door through seven innings of work to cap what was a masterful season for the ladies in Burnt Orange.
