Texas DPS issues new driver’s license, ID card designs

The new cards include upgraded security features to try and eliminate stolen identities.

TEXAS, USA — Texas drivers can now receive new and improved licenses.

On Monday, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) began administering new driver’s licenses and identification cards statewide in an effort to increase safety.

According to DPS, the upgraded cards will no longer show a gold star on the top right corner. Instead, they will display a black star to signify that the license is a Real ID. The cards will also shift identifying information to a spot that is easier to read.

The cards are made from a material that makes it harder to recreate, which can help eliminate counterfeit concerns.

“The way driver licenses are made can make a big difference in terms of public safety,” DPS driver license division chief Sheri Gipson said in a statement.

Gipson said that the improved design will create additional challenges for people attempting to create fake driver’s licenses and I.D. cards.

DPS said current cards will still remain active until they are expired.
