Texas football legend’s wife posts emotional update following life-changing accident

Jordan Shipley’s wife shared an emotional update after the Texas football legend was discharged from the hospital following severe burn injuries.

TEXAS, USA — University of Texas football legend Jordan Shipley has been discharged from the hospital following severe burn injuries sustained earlier this month, according to an update shared by his wife on social media.

On Saturday, Shipley’s wife, Sunny, said they had officially left the hospital after what she described as a life-changing week.

“I will have more words later but, even so, there are no amount of words that will be sufficient to express the gratitude I feel for our friends, family, community and complete strangers,” she said in the social post. “This week has been life changing in many ways…. But because I know so many are praying, I wanted to let you know that we left the hospital. I still can’t believe it.”

She said multiple doctors, nurses and specialists described Shipley’s recovery as remarkable.

“Numerous doctors, nurses and specialists kept telling us, as we were being discharged, that he is nothing short of a miracle and they’ve never seen someone come in to their care in his condition and leave this soon… much less be out of the hospital bed,” she said.

While Shipley is no longer hospitalized, his wife said his recovery is far from over.

“He’s still in a lot of pain, we have a hard and long journey ahead but you can guarantee he and I will carry it with joy and praise,” she said. “We aren’t quite home yet, but will stay close the hospital as he has dressing changes and we will monitoring his adjustment out of the hospital.”

She also thanked the medical team that treated him.

“The Dell Seton burn team, nurses and everyone we came in contact with there are special people that impacted us greatly. Please say a prayer for them and thank God for them, as they are dealing with heartbreaking cases all day everyday,” she said.

What happened

Shipley was critically injured in an accident on his ranch near Burnet earlier this month. His family said the machine he was operating caught fire. Although he was able to escape, he suffered severe burns.

The Burnet County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to a call around 2 p.m. Shipley was driven to a local hospital by a worker on the ranch before being flown to Austin for further treatment. At the time, his family said he was in critical but stable condition.

At the time, Shipley’s wife said he was being kept sedated due to pain and that doctors were closely monitoring his burns, lungs, hands, infection risk and kidney function.

A Longhorn legend

Shipley is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished wide receivers in University of Texas football history.

During his six-year career with the Longhorns, Shipley became Texas’ all-time leader in receptions with 248 and finished second in receiving yards (3,191) and touchdown catches (33). He was a two-time All-American, a finalist for the Biletnikoff Award and a semifinalist for the Maxwell Award.

Shipley played in 53 career games, starting 35, and was known for his versatility as both a receiver and return specialist. He later went on to play professionally after being selected in the third round of the 2010 NFL Draft.

As his recovery continues, Shipley’s wife said the family remains grateful for the outpouring of support.

“We love you all deeply. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”
