Game Wardens will be checking different boats for the right equipment to be on the water
SAN ANTONIO — Parks, rivers, and lakes are going to be packed this Memorial Day weekend with everyone ready to enjoy the summer.
For anyone ready to rev their boat engines, it’s important to keep safety top of mind.
Texas Game Wardens will be at Calaveras Lake this Memorial Day weekend making sure boaters have the essentials for a safe and fun weekend.
Essentials to remember
Have life jackets for everyone on the boat, a fire extinguisher, and boat registration.
Children 12 and under need to keep life jackets on at all times while on the boat.
If you follow the rules you can avoid a ticket which can cost between $25-$500.
And the last thing anyone on a boat needs to do is drink and drive.
“The boating while intoxicated laws work the same way as driving while intoxicated laws. A person can be arrested for that. They can be jailed, they can be fined, and they can have their license, suspended,” said Game Warden Roland Fuentes.
Fuentes said that the water levels are good to boat at Calaveras Lake but says to be mindful of strong winds that could make the water choppy.
Fuentes also said to keep 50 feet of space between other boats and jet skis and to have the kill switch on your boat – in case you run into a problem.
