The city of Comfort is getting a little cozier this spring — and significantly more caffeinated. The Spotted Deer Coffee Company, a fan favorite in Fair Oaks, is opening a second location in Comfort, taking over for the former Wander’n Calf Coffee spot.
The move also marks the triumphant return of The Spotted Deer‘s baked goods — specifically, their cult-favorite scones, made from a Fischer’s scone mix imported from Seattle.
Owner Gabriella McAllen, a Seattle native and self-professed baking addict, started the shop with her father when she was just 18. Now, alongside her husband, Justin, she’s growing the brand with major Hill Country energy — and a side of kolaches.
“When we first started, we baked everything in-house,” McAllen told MySA. “But our (Fair Oaks) space got too small. This new location means we can finally bring the bakery back, not just to Comfort, but to Fair Oaks Ranch too.”
McAllen recently celebrated her shop’s sixth year anniversary, which she attributes to a supportive Hill Country business community and a need for more coffee spots in town.
“It’s a lot of the same people,” the owner said about her relationships with licensing and regulation agencies in Boerne and Comfort, which allowed for a smooth expansion deeper into the heart of Texas, rather than into San Antonio, which she and her husband also considered in their expansion plan.
“We want to be in the Hill Country,” she explained.
Locals will remember Wander’n Calf Coffee as one of Comfort’s few dedicated coffee shops, with its absence leaving a latte-shaped hole in town.
“People sometimes had to make a big drive to get their coffee,” McAllen went on. She says the Spotted Deer is ready to step up and meet local needs with a bigger space, all-day breakfast sandwiches, and, of course, those blueberry scones.
The new location is expected to be open in the next two to three weeks at 817 Front St., Comfort, TX 78013. The Fair Oaks location is at 8000 Fair Oaks Pkwy Ste. 2102.
