Texas leaders react to shooting of right-wing political activist Charlie Kirk

Kirk was shot while speaking to a crowd at Utah Valley University on Wednesday. His condition is unknown.

HOUSTON — Texas leaders took to social media to express their concern after Charlie Kirk, the CEO and co-founder of the conservative youth organization Turning Point USA, was shot at an event at a Utah college on Wednesday.

As of Wednesday around 2 p.m., Kirk’s condition was unknown.

College officials said at least one shot was fired and a suspect was in custody.

Kirk was attending an event at Utah Valley University when he was shot. It’s unclear what level of screening took place for participants at the event. One witness said there was no security checkpoint to enter the area where Kirk was speaking.

Witnesses say they heard at least one gunshot and saw Kirk grab at his neck. Spectators screamed and some ran away.

Kirk was scheduled to visit Houston in a couple of weeks. He also visited Texas A&M University earlier this year.

“He is in the hospital, and we are praying for him at this time,” said Aubrey Laitsch, public relations manager for Turning Point USA.

After news of the shooting started coming out, Texas leaders posted messages on social media.
