Texas man has message for drivers after metal rod smashes through his windshield

Charlie Armendariz said the rod was kicked up by an 18-wheeler and ended up in his front seat.

BROWNSVILLE, Texas — A man in South Texas is warning other drivers about the dangers of debris on the road after a metal rod smashed through his windshield out on the highway.

Charlie Armendariz says an 18-wheeler in front of him ran over a running board that was on the road, and that sent the metal flying right into the windshield of his Jeep.

You could see the damage it did and the damage it could have done if a passenger was in the front seat.

Now he says he’ll be thinking twice about how close he drives behind other vehicles and is reminding other drivers to double-check items they are hauling.

“It generally results from somebody who’s traveling in a pickup truck-type vehicle that doesn’t secure their load,” he said. “So that’s really where the problem starts. If the guy carrying the stuff would tie it down, guys who were driving behind might not be so prone to run into the debris.”

If you see something that looks like a danger to drivers, you can call local police or report it online to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
