Texas martial arts instructor accused of sexually assaulting student during individual training

According to the Montgomery Co. Sheriff’s office, Stephen Zarruk is also a substitute teacher and contract PE coach for Conroe ISD.

CONROE, Texas — A martial arts instructor and substitute teacher is facing some disturbing charges.

Stephen Zarruk, 32, has been charged with indecency with a child. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office says Zarruk is an instructor at Woodlands Karate and MMA. He is accused of sexually assaulting a young student during individual training time there.

Conroe ISD confirmed in a statement to KHOU 11 that Zarruk had worked with the district as a part-time substitute teacher since Fall 2021. The district said a background check was done at the time and that once they learned of the allegations, they began the termination process.

“Stephen Zarruk worked as a part-time substitute in Conroe ISD beginning in the fall of 2021. As with all potential employees, a background check was done and came back clear. Upon learning of this upsetting matter, steps were taken to begin the termination process. At this time, we have no indication anything inappropriate occurred on any Conroe ISD campus. We encourage anyone with information to contact the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.”

His bail was set at $100,000. He has posted bond.
