Texas officially names Sean Miller as new head basketball coach ahead of introduction

Miller spent the last three seasons as the head coach at Xavier and has been a head coach since 2004.

AUSTIN, Texas — Just hours after firing head basketball coach Rodney Terry, the Texas Longhorns had his replacement.

The Longhorns officially named Sean Miller as their new head coach on Monday following reports that the Xavier head coach would replace Terry.

Miller was reportedly a finalist for the Texas job in 2023 before the Longhorns settled on giving Terry the full-time role.

Miller spent the last three seasons as the head coach at Xavier, the same place he started his head coaching career in 2004. In between his two stints at Xavier, he served as the head coach at Arizona, making it to the Elite Eight three times in 12 seasons with the Wildcats.

The Longhorns should have some familiarity with Miller, having faced his team at Xavier twice in the NCAA Tournament over the last three seasons. This season, Miller’s Musketeers ended the Longhorns’ season in the First Four, which ultimately ended Terry’s tenure.

I’m so excited about the future of our men’s basketball program and thrilled to add another phenomenal coach to our Longhorn Family,” said Texas athletics director Chris Del Conte. “When we were considering our next head coach, Sean Miller was a name that immediately came up as a perfect fit for us.”

In 20 seasons as a head coach, Miller has a 487–196 record, a 71% winning percentage.

Miller will be introduced as the 27th head coach in Texas men’s basketball history on Tuesday.
