Right now, the U.S. leads the medal count in the 2024 Paris Olympics — and Texas athletes have heavily contributed to that success.
DALLAS — Texans have been racking up Olympic medals in Paris this summer — and many have reached the gold standard.
The number of Texans donning the red, white and blue in France further grows when you expand it to include athletes with Texas ties — like Hailey Van Lith, a student-athlete at TCU who just won bronze for the U.S. in Women’s 3×3 Basketball, and Julien Alfred, who ran at UT-Austin and beat out Dallas’ Sha-Carri Richardson in the 100-metere dash to win her home country of St. Lucia its the first-ever Olympic gold.
So, if you were to combine the efforts of all the Olympians that Texas can arguably claim, how does the state stack up against other competing nations?
Let’s just say our representatives are doing Texas proud.
In terms of total medals, Texas would rank 6th internationally at this point in the games — three medals behind Australia, and three ahead of South Korea, Japan and Italy each.
When it comes to just gold medals, Texas would currently be tied with Japan for 7th place on the world rankings.
Listen, y’all: There a reason they say you shouldn’t mess with Texas. And, clearly, that logic applies to sports, too.
