Texas Outdoors goes out of this world in immersive, virtual reality experience

KENS 5’s Barry Davis and a group of coworkers checked the hype at Sandbox VR, an immersive experience at the Rim.

SAN ANTONIO — This week’s Texas Outdoors is going out of this world and into a virtual one.

KENS 5’s Barry Davis and Weather Chief Bill Taylor took a group of coworkers to check out Sandbox VR, an immersive virtual-reality experience for groups of up to six at the Rim in northwest San Antonio. The business uses Hollywood motion capture cameras, 3D precision body trackers, custom hardware, and haptic suits to bring the experience to life.

There are eight different experiences and the group chose to play Squid Games. They watched a safety video, then suited up and placed trackers on their arms and legs.

“Remember your opponents are real, so watch out for one another,” a staff member told the group.

The competition is real, just like in the Squid Games TV show.

“So I may need someone to do the weather tonight. I can’t guarantee I’m going to be there now,” Taylor said at one point in the game.

“You had to catch things that look like they are really there,” Davis said. “Apparently, we were killing ourselves off a lot.”

The group particularly enjoyed the “Cross the Bridge” game. All in all, Taylor and Davis said the experience led to fun, laughter and bonding between the group.

“It is amazing how much it gets your competitive juices flowing. And afterward, when they show you the videos of you in the game, I promise you won’t stop laughing,” Davis said.
