Texas Outdoors: Kids will be buried in fun at ‘Dig World!’

Theme parks are great fun, but Dig World takes the fun to a whole new level… up and down!

KATY, Texas — It’s almost every little boy or girl’s dream: getting to actually operate heavy equipment.

“Hey, why not a construction theme park? That’s a logical thing, right?” co-owner of Dig World Jacob Robinson said.

He got the idea after his son Pierce came down with bacterial meningitis that left him with numerous physical and cognitive disabilities.

Despite the new challenges, Robinson says one thing he never lost was his love for construction equipment and garbage trucks and dump trucks.

So in the middle of a pandemic, Robinson and his partner came up with the idea and opened Dig World.

Kids, and those of us who still want to be a kid, can actually operate an excavator, skid steer, ride 40′ in the air on a manlift or drive a UTV on an asphalt track.

“Look what I did Dad, look! Look down in that ditch! I made it smooth!” my 9-year-old son Micah yelled as he was operating the excavator.

He has loved construction equipment ever since he was little, playing with Tonka toys. Now he was living, only what he could dream of doing.

He took to it like a fish to water, smoothly moving the controls and digging a huge hole. He made it look so easy, so I climbed on one and gave it a whirl. Like most things, it just takes a little time and you get the hang of it. After that we both climbed on a skid steer and maneuvered it around the track, then on to the excavator games.

Micah also wanted to drive the UTV around, even though he has a 4-wheeler at home.

“Yeah, but it doesn’t have a steering wheel, with a seat and doors!” he told me. We spent a couple of hours there that seemed to fly by.

Robinson also does something really cool once every quarter: he closes the park to everyone, except families of children with special needs.

“It gives them the opportunity to do the things other kids get to do,” he says.
