On Monday morning, around 7:40 a.m., APD officers responded to a call reporting a possible shooting/stabbing in the 8100 block of Research Boulevard, toward North Austin. When officers arrived on scene, they located a woman in her 30s or 40s behind an auto repair shop, who was unresponsive and had obvious trauma to her body.
Although the investigation is still in its early stages, police said it appears the woman was shot in a field by an unknown suspect or suspects who fled the area. The woman, who has not yet been identified, was pronounced dead on the scene at 7:53 a.m.
“Late last night, early this morning we had a female murdered right here in our city,” Corporal Jose Mendez said at a media briefing. “Safety will continue to be our number one priority here in Austin and we will do whatever it takes to figure out who did this and why this happened.”
Homicide Detectives and Crime Scene Specialists were also there to process the scene and interview witnesses. One witness told police that they heard a popping noise late last night or early this morning.
Detectives are seeking the public’s help in identifying any witnesses or suspects to the crime. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Austin Police Department at 512-974-TIPS.
