Texas primary: Lt. Gov. Patrick scores Republican nomination as 3 Democrats compete for a spot on the November ballot

Patrick defeated his three Republican primary opponents, while State Rep. Vikki Goodwin and two others are vying for the Democratic nomination.

AUSTIN, Texas — Texas voters are heading to the polls to decide who will be the Republican and Democratic nominees for lieutenant governor.

Incumbent Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick defeated his three Republican primary opponents as he seeks a fourth term, the AP projects. Meanwhile, three Democrats are competing in their primary, including State Rep. Vikki Goodwin.

Live results for the Republican and Democratic primary races for Texas lieutenant governor will be posted here as the polls close at 7 p.m.

Patrick was first elected as lieutenant governor in 2014 and re-elected in both 2018 and 2022. Before his time as lieutenant governor, he was twice elected to the Texas Senate, in 2006 and 2010, representing part of Harris County. He launched his re-election campaign for a fourth term as lieutenant governor in August 2025.

Prior to his career as an elected official, Patrick spent over 40 years in the media as a television anchor, conservative talk host and radio station owner.

Patrick is well-known for his conservative policies. He describes himself as “a leader in the fight to protect liberty,” including lowering property and business taxes, securing the Texas-Mexico border and protecting “life, religious freedom, and the Second Amendment.”

His priority bills for the most recent legislative session included passing education savings accounts, banning THC in Texas, increasing homestead exemptions, placing the Ten Commandments in Texas public school classrooms and banning lottery couriers.

“Texas Republicans have spoken clearly, reaffirming their commitment to keeping our state on a conservative path,” Patrick said in a statement on Tuesday evening. “Under my leadership, the Texas Senate has been the driving force for Texas becoming the most conservative state in the nation, and I will continue that push during my next term. I would like to thank the conservative majority of Texas voters for re-nominating me.”

In the Democratic primary, the candidate with the most name recognition is Goodwin, a real estate agent and six-year member of the Texas House of Representatives, representing parts of Austin and the Lake Travis area.

The other Democrats on the primary ballot are Courtney Head and Marcos Isaias Velez.

If the Democratic primary goes to a runoff, that election will be held on May 26. The general election is scheduled for Nov. 3.
