SAN ANTONIO — The Texas Rangers are investigating the death of a staff member for Republican Congressman Tony Gonzales.
Uvalde police officials say Regina Santos-Aviles died on Saturday. According to her LinkedIn page, she had worked as a regional district director for Gonzales since November 2021, having previously spent time as executive director of the Uvalde Area Chamber of Commerce.
Uvalde Police Chief Homer Delgado said in a statement that there are no indications of foul play in Santos-Aviles’ death, but the Texas Rangers are helping local authorities complete their investigation. Details about her death are otherwise scarce.
“As is our standard procedure, all unattended deaths are investigated,” Delgado said. “We are working closely with the victim’s family, who are fully cooperating with our investigators during this difficult time.”
Gonzales, who has represented Texas’ 23rd Congressional District since 2021, said in a statement that Santos-Aviles will be remembered for working to make a difference in the lives of Texans.
“We are all heart-stricken by the recent news,” he wrote. “She will always be remembered for her passion towards Uvalde and helping the community become a better place.”
