Texas Rangers near deal to trade Marcus Semien to the Mets, reports say

The Rangers are set to acquire a talented outfielder for an All-Star second baseman, ESPN reports.

ARLINGTON, Texas — The Texas Rangers are reportedly finalizing a trade involving Marcus Semien.

According to ESPN’s MLB Insider Jeff Passan, Semien could be traded to the New York Mets for outfielder Brandon Nimmo.

Marcus Semien joined the Rangers in December 2021 on a seven-year, $175 million deal, becoming a cornerstone of the club’s effort to rebuild into a contender. Semien led MLB in plate appearances in each of his first two seasons with the Rangers, played all 162 games in 2023, and helped anchor the lineup during the franchise’s first World Series championship run. That year, he hit .276 with 122 runs scored and earned a Silver Slugger while serving as the team’s everyday leadoff hitter and second baseman.

Semien is coming off his fourth season in Arlington, in which he won his second career Gold Glove.

Nimmo was selected 13th overall in the first round of the 2011 MLB Draft by the Mets and has spent his entire career in the orange and blue.

Since his major league debut in 2016, Nimmo has steadily improved. In the 2025 season, he posted a .262 batting average with 25 home runs and 92 RBIs, setting a career high in runs batted in.

The Mets have plenty of talent in the outfield, namely Juan Soto, but grabbing Semien could strengthen the team’s infield defense.
