Reading scores surpass pre-pandemic levels
Statewide performance in RLA exceeded pre-pandemic levels for the first time, according to TEA. Fifth-grade students led the way with a four-point gain in the percentage of students meeting grade-level standards. Grades 3 and 4 followed closely, each improving by three points. Grade 8 rose by two points, while grades 6 and 7 remained steady compared to last year.
“These results are encouraging and reflect the impact of the strategic supports we’ve implemented in recent years,” Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath said. “With RLA scores now surpassing pre-pandemic levels, we are seeing meaningful signs of academic recovery and progress.”
Math sees mixed gains
Mathematics results varied by grade level, but TEA pointed to significant gains in grade 8 (up five points) and grade 3 (up four points). Grade 4 saw a slight increase of one point. Grades 5 and 7 experienced modest declines.
Science results improve
Fifth and eighth-grade science results both saw measurable gains. Grade 5 improved by three points, and grade 8 increased by four points over last year.
Social studies slips
Eighth-grade social studies was the only subject area to show a decline, with scores dropping one percentage point compared to 2024.
