SAN ANTONIO — Texas Republicans are asking the federal government to reimburse the state for the $11 billion it spent on border security during the Biden administration.
Several regional leaders, including U.S. Congressmen Chip Roy and Tony Gonzales and Senator Ted Cruz, signed a letter to the Department of Justice and Department of Homeland Security requesting the repayment.
The letter details how Texas spent billions over four years on “Operation Lone Star,” approved by Governor Greg Abbott. The program funded border wall construction, barriers along the Rio Grande, and allowed state agents to patrol the border, stopping more than 500,000 illegal crossings.
This request comes after the one big beautiful bill was passed, providing $13 billion for states that reinforced security at their borders.
According to the letter, these efforts decreased illegal crossings by 87% and also funded the prosecution of illegal immigrants in Texas courts.
